Heating Up for the Holidays: The Benefits of a Blower for a Fireplace

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, and with it, the frosty air might have you considering if it’s the right time for additional heating options.

Fireplace blowers and fans are highly effective tools to increase the amount of heat that goes into your living area and works to keep you and your family warmer. But, it also reduces your need to use more oil or electricity so much that it offsets your monthly utility bill. Now, that’s a great benefit!

If you have a fireplace, or are considering installing a fireplace, and want to make it more effective for the colder winter months, keep reading. In this article we’re going to share the basics of how fireplace blowers can be of benefit to you.

What is a Fireplace Blower?

A fireplace blower is a fan mounted on the exterior of the fireplace or inside the unit but outside the firebox itself. It is used to circulate air around the unit’s hot exterior before pushing it back into the room. Fireplace fans help to circulate warm air and increase heat penetration into the room. Every fireplace emits a certain level of radiant heat, but a fireplace blower can really maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of your fireplace to heat large spaces.

How Does a Fireplace Blower Work?

The blower draws in cool room air and forces that air upwards along the back or side of the fireplace. The air is heated as it travels and exits the fireplace as warm air.  Because of the warm air’s convective properties, the now warmer air will rise towards the ceiling and cause the cooler air to be pushed down towards the floor. This movement of air helps to circulate the air in the room.

The entire process is much more than just a fan pushing warm air back into the room. Instead, it helps to cycle the room’s air on an ongoing basis.

All fireplaces rely on radiant heat to warm up a room. When you add a fireplace fan, you are combining convective and radiant heat to produce unmatched warmth and comfort!

Can You Add a Fireplace Blower to an Existing Fireplace?

Yes, you can add a fan/blower to most gas and wood fireplaces, inserts, and stoves. Some units already come with blowers and some do not, but they can be installed into the unit and can be included in the sales process.

However, the easiest way is for the fans to be added before installation. If they are added afterward it may just take a little bit more work. In any case, you will want a certified fireplace dealer from AES to install your fan to ensure it is done correctly.
