Heat & Glo: Rutherford 50

Fifty inches wide and 38 tall, the largest Rutherford is built to be the first thing guests see.

Quick Facts

• Heating Capacity: Designed for ambiance, not as a heat source.
• Viewing Area: 50″ wide and 38″ tall.
• Fuel: Wood.
• Fan: None

Who It’s For

In a lodge, a great room, or a home with a soaring ceiling, a modest fireplace disappears. The fire has to be big enough to hold the room. The Rutherford 50 is the largest of the line, pairing a 50-inch width with the tall 38-inch opening. It is for the homeowner who wants a grand, traditional wood fire as the signature of the house.

What Makes It Special

The opening is big enough for a full stack of wood and a fire you can see from the kitchen or the loft. Build the interior with red, cream, or black firebrick, or with herringbone or traditional refractory panels.

For gas later, the price book offers a 30-inch three-tier burner kit and media such as cannonballs or crushed glass.

Possible Downsides

• Your installer needs the maker’s advanced training before it ships.
• It is not approved for installation in Canada.
• The interior is a required, separate purchase.

If your home calls for a fire on a grand scale, the Rutherford 50 is the right decision. Every gathering ends up in the same place: in front of it.

Choose firebrick or refractory, a matching brick hearth extension, black bi-fold glass doors, a 30-inch gas burner kit with logs, cannonballs, or crushed glass, a hearth extension, and a wood or non-combustible mantel shelf.
