What to Know Before Installing a TV Over a Fireplace

Fall is officially here and few things could be cozier than watching television next to a crackling fire. Due to the layout of some homes, as well as personal design preferences, often the best arrangement is mounting your TV over the fireplace.

There is general disagreement and conflicting information available as to which kind of fireplace should be installed to accommodate a TV installation: wood, gas, or electric? If you are interested in installing a fireplace that you plan to hang a TV over, there are a few suggestions to keep in mind starting with:

  1. Which kind of fireplace should I install to mount a TV over?
  2. And what design considerations should I keep in mind to make sure it is safe?

Here’s what our experts at AES have to say.

Electric Fireplace

There are many pros to installing an electric fireplace. Electric fireplaces produce less heat than a gas or wood burning fireplace, and yet their heat has a 95% to 100% efficiency rate. Most models are relatively inexpensive to purchase and install, especially from AES Hearth & Patio! Most people already have electricity in their home so running extra lines usually isn’t necessary. The eye-catching flame and smoke effects give a realistic feel without the safety concerns. Some options include a “flame only” setting, so you can even get the ambiance without the heat!

Gas Fireplaces

Gas fireplaces generally produce less heat upward behind the mounting wall than wood-burning fireplaces but significantly more than electric. But, not to worry. You can protect your TV from fireplace heat by closing the fireplace doors and adding a mantel that will deflect some heat from going directly up toward the TV. If the temperature remains below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the TV should be safe in that location.

Wood Burning Fireplaces

Wood burning fireplaces will throw off more heat than gas or electric. But, the fact is, as long as the TV is above the mantel, the mantel will act as a shield from the rising heat. Features such as a deep mantle and a strong blower can protect electronic equipment mounted above.

Fireplace Accessories

Don’t forget about fireplace tool sets! You will need something to help keep your fireplace running smoothly. These can come in matching finishes and styles, so your fireplace scene is one seamless design.

There are many areas where you can let your creativity flow, from the mantel and facings, to the padding, doors, and screens. And, with a 26% biomass fuel tax credit for qualifying units installed before December 31, 2022, there’s no time like the present to have a fireplace installed by an AES professional.
